DESPERATE PLIGHT

BEWILDERED INHABITANTS Rec. March Toldo, March 3. The whole north-east coast of the main island was shaken, and the coastline for 300 miles wns affected. Many of the victims were killed in their beds. Numerous inhabitants of Kamaisha, anticipating a tidal wave, saved themselves by fleeing to the hills, Sbortly afterwards a wave of 40ft in height swept tbe coast, rushing far inland and spreading desolation. The village of Funakosbi was wiped out, and the famous Sabishiro Beaclv was devastated. The sufferers are mairily fisherfolk, the poverty of the inhabitants making relief difficult. Large numbers' of fishing boats were presumably overwhelmed, as it was impossible for them to ride out tbe seas. The horrors of fire and flood were combined with the prolonged 'quakes in the darkness, as the survivors rushed wildly for safety.
