CASUALTY LIST NOW OVER FIFTEEN HUNDRED
j Rec. March 4. Tokio, March, 4. Raging snow and a blizzard added to the havoc of the earthquake. Official figures at midnight placed the dead at 1535, missing 948, and injured at 338. The total casualties are expected to exceed 3000. Ten destroyers and three flying boats have been despatched for rescue and relief work. The storm drove back the naval aeroplanes which were endeavouring to assess the damage. Twenty-five motor-boats were swept away at Maiko by nine successive tidal waves on a 100 mile front which swept thousands of homes to destruction. The billows hurled 1500 fishing boats ashore, where they were demolished, their shrieking occupants operishing amid the wreckage of the obliterated villages. It is estimated that 4750 houses were destroyed.
