DIVERSE VIEWS REGARDING THE GOVERNMENT'S POWERS
Wellington, Wednesday. A suggestion made by the Prinih Minister that the Government should overcom,e ohstruction of legislation hy- the Opposition by making more use of Orders-in-Council was -briefly referred to in the House of Representatives to-night during a discussion in the committee stage of the Saies Tax Bill. It was pointed out that tlie Government had extensive powensi hy Order-in-Couneil to make amendmeiits in the bilh "You have the power to exempt anythirig> from the tax," said Mr. F. Langstone (Labour, Waimarino). The Minister of Finance (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates). I don't think we have. Mr. Langstone: Yes, you can do it by Order-in-Council. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland) : I understand ypu want to do everything by Order-in-Council? Mt\ Coates: No. We would not have been sitting here for the last few days if it could be done hy Ordei'-in-Council. Mi*. Holland: Apparently then, the Prime Minister was not speaking for the Government.
