two important annual meetings scheduled to-day OVERSEAS INVITATION" Two important annual meetings will be held in connection with the Press Conference to-day. At noon the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union will hold its annual gathering followed by the aiinual meeting of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors' Association at 2.30 p.m. In the morning, representatives of the smaller provincial papers will meet and the Auckland Provincial Newspaper Proprietors' Indusffial Union of Employers. Yesterday Sections 1 and 2 of the N.P.A. met but the unplea'sant weather conditions kept delegates ihdoors throughout the day. The proposed tour of inspection of the Horohoro and Ngakuru blocks was postponed. The conference will conclude on Friday with the annual meeting of the Press Association. An invitation to the New Zealand Press to be represented at the Imperial Advertising Exhibition and Conference to be held at Olympia, London in July next has been received from Major J. J. Astor. It has been arranged that Mr. W. Easton, Manager of the Otago Daily Times, will represent the newspaper interests and Mr. Will Appletbn of Wellington, the advertisiiig agericies. Mr. Appleton has also beeii requested to act on the advisory committee in connection with the conference. Both delegates will probably leave New Zealand in May next.
Veteran Journalist. Mr. P. Selig, for many years chairman of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association and its first life member, is prevented by urgent business from attending the conference. This is only the second occasion on which Mr. Selig has not been present since he was appointed a member. Mr. Selig is a foundation member of tKe New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union and was, for many .years, ehairman of the United Press Association. He was manager of the Christchurch Press Company for more than 30 years. « Mr. Selig has made many visits to Rotorua and, with the late Sir George Fenwick took the baths for treatment. Mr. Selig has just celebrated the 60th anniversary of his initiation into the Professor of Journalism. and although he retired on his jubilee, he is still very active and continues to write for papers in the Dominion, Australia and abroad>
