COMPLETE FAILURE

UNEMPLOYMENT WORK / : * govt. roundly conde aed by mayor of rotorua "DETERIORATION OF MEN" "Unless the Government does something and does something quickiy;" said Mr. T. Jackson, Mayor of Rotorua, last evening -when dealihg with the unemployment question, "the deT terioration of the men themselves wili be disastrous to the country. Anyone who has had any experience of handling the unemployed is cognisant of the complete failure of all forms of relief work. I thiiilc that we should inform the Government of this and suggest the substitution of approved works at standard rates of pay which could be administered and carried out by local bodies. The matter was raised by a letter from the Greymouth Borough Couhcil forwarding a copy of a remit asking that the Unemployment Board be requested to issue each three months figures showing the financial position ■- of the board, the amount available for distribution, the amount distributed and where and how distributed, the balance (if any) in hand arid several other items of information. Councillors generally considered that even if the board decided to give the information it would serve little good purpose and merely iead to d-is-sension and decided merely to receive the remit, taking no action.
