After two years of absolute quiet, Mount Vesuvius suddenly burst into activity, hurling showers of incandescent stones into the air, causing-a fiery glow in the sky, and terrorising the inhabitants of the surrounding villages who are quitting their homes. It is predieted tlxe volcano's activity is likely to increase in intensity ' until tlxe spring, when there are f ears j of a serious eruption, though less eatastrophic than that of 1929. Vesuvius "is a famous active volcano in South Italy on the side of the Bay of Naples; its altitude is 3948 feet. Its eruption in 76 A.D. destroyed Poixxpeii and Herculaneum and frequent eruptions since have caused great havoc. A funieular railway from the base of the mountaip to tlxe edge of the cratex* has existed sixxce 1880. . .
