AIRMEN TENDER DINNER TO SMITHY AND CREW LEAVES FOR ROTORUA MONDAY New Plymouth, Thursday. A complimentary dinner was tendered to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his companions in the Southern Cross, by the New Plymouth Aero Club to-night. Ten members of the North Island Aero Clubs and representatives of the Taranaki Aero Club were present to honour Sir Charles and his companions. The Mayor of New Plymouth, Mr. Griffiths, proposed the toast of Smithy and his companoins and said that Sir Charles' intention to make New Plymouth his landing place in New Zealand had been influenced by the. geographical \position and the fact of such a landing mark as Mount Egmont. "When I decided to come to New Zealand," said Sir Charles, "I wanted to land at the nearest possible point. Cape Egmont is closer than anywhere else and Taranaki has a fine position geographically being so close to Australia. It will be the ultimate terminal in the Tasman Service when it is established. It might be ten years or longer, but will ultimately come for a certainty." He paid a tribute to the erew and to the ground staff, whose organisation made his job so easy. The Southern Cross will make a flight of 100 miles around Mount Egmont on Saturday and will leave on Monday for Rotorua.
