MILITARY PAY
MIMISTER POINTS OUT THAT ALL-ROUND REDUCTIONS NECESSARY MAJOR IVORY'S RESIGNATION Wellington, Thursday. The opinion was expressed by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, that although officers of the Defence Department had suffered reductions in pay, combined with other branches of the Puhlic Service, no reasons could be given for the statement in some quarters that there was a concerted move on the part of some members to resign their offices. The Minister stated that he understood the main reason for Major Ivory's resignation was that he intended going to England in anticipation of receiving a better appointment there. Mr. Cobbe remarked that the salaries or wages of officers and, men of the Public Service had been reduced, every avenue outside the Public Service had to he cut to meet the present lean times. "These are," he added, "very bad times for everybody in every country, and the man in a secure position to-day is very fortunate, although the pay might not, in his opinion, be commensurate with his services." A message yesterday stated thai many military officers were resigning their positions owing to poor pay.
