VISIT TO ROTORUA
' SIR CHARLES KINGSFORD SMITH'S PROPOSED LANDING
Mr. Wilfrid Kingsford Smith, accompanied by Mr. S. Sheil, Aviation Officer of the Vacuup .Oil Company, Limited, will shortly call at Rotorua to inspect landing grounds. It is to be sincerely hoped that a suitable aerodrome will be found, and thus afl'ord an opportunity for the residents „f this district to see the famous monoplane. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith is very desirous of visiting here but owing to the special requirements of the "Southern Cross" he cannot lisk the machine unless he is satisfied that there is room enough to oper- : ate. Mr. Kingsford Smith arriyed by the Zealandia on the 20th to finalise all ; matters in connection with the pasi . enger carrying tour of New Zealand by his brother, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. The following places have !.een definitely selected for landings. New Plymouth, Auckland, Hamilton, Gisborne, Napier, Hastings, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Levin, Masterton, and Whangarei, and a number of other towns will be visited to see ■f a call can be arranged. Mr. Kingsford Smith stresses the )oint that Sir Charles is visiting the Jominion for business reasons, and that he will have to reluctantly devine many cordial invitations to social funetions. The work of making jontinuous flights in the daytime is /ery onerous, and it is only by sparng social activities in the evenings lat he is able to carry on. He has uad some very lucrative offers to go i broad, but he desires to remain in Australasia, and it is only by watch■ng his health and strength that he is able to carry on.
