THE FIRST DAY FAVOURITE FAST PASSAGE ANNEXES THE CUP THE QUORN IN RAILWAY

Auckland, Monday. The usual Ellerslie weather prevailed for the firsfy day of the' summer meeting. The Cup was won by the favourite, Fast Passage, and the Sprint went to the fourth favourite, both rewarding their supporters with nice dividends. The totalisator handl'ed £62,522 for the day compared with £71,63-8 for last year, a decrease of £9116. Queen's Plate > I Paying double figures, La Moderne gave J. McDonald the first win of the meeting. From a good start La Moderne was followed by Lordly Knight, Jonathan and Sunny Bachelor. Azalea went to the front and was chased up the hill by King's Knave to join her in the lead with Carfex in the centre. Azalea and King's Knave turned for home a length clear of La Moderne, who got
a run on the rails and jumped clear two lengths. Gay Marigold came very fast at the distance. Azalea was ihird, with King's Knave fourth followed by Jonathan, Broken Rule, Sunny Baehelor. Carfex died away. Berate was very prominent in parts of the race. La Moderne looks as though she is coming right again. GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES Of £750; two-year-olds. Colts and geldings 8.10, fillies, 8.5. Won by a head; two lengths. Time, 1.13 2-5. Re,d Manfred Fails Badlly: Heaviiy backed Red Manfred failed very badly after having every chance in the Foal Stakes. Diatomous went out very fast from Impasto, Princess Doreen and • Guarantee, with Midian and Pegged Exchange badly. Diatomous and Princess Doreen led to the top where Red Manfred ran into third place. Diatomous was first to the turn for home with Princess Dorjen at close quarters, who lasted to win nicsly from Diatomous with Guarantee third, then came Impasto, Midian and Red Manfred. Red Manfred ran about all over the course. Milian, after having a lot ofi ground to malce up, was running on and is worth watching. ROBINSON HANDICAP ■Of £200. Won by half a length. Time 1.36 3-5. Dead Heat in Robinson It would not be an Ellerslie meeting unless there was a dead heat. The Judge ran true to form in the Robinson Handicap. Karangapai got ^a length advantage over Toplight, Holly Lu, Moonfleet and Black Songster. Karangapai was the only leader and the home turn saw Broken Rule and Woodfull disputing matters. Blanford then came up fast and dead heated with Karangapai, with Holly Lu third, Brolcan Rule fourth, followed by Sammy, Black Songster, Royal Gallant. It was a poor decision and met with hooting. Fast Passage's Record Cuj^ Fast Passage duly won the Cup, though she had to put up a record to beat Antique, that the Judge 'erroneously plajced third to Great Star. The mistake was obvious. Knight of Australia led out from Tigerism, Teels and. Gay Crest. Past the stand the order was Knight of Australia, Teels, Great Star, Tigerism, Fast Passage, Gay Crest, Royal Artist, Concentrate, Great Emblem, Antique, Tout le Mond, Jaloux, Gay Idea and Speedmint. Knight of Australia led to the straight, then stopped, while Tigerism, Great Star, Fast Passage, Royal Artist, Teels, Jaloux, Concentrate and Antique followed. In the run home Fast Passage came through to win from Antique as stated with Great Star third, Speedmint, followed by \ Gold Trail, Concentrate, Gay Idea, Teels, Tout le Mond and Knight of Australia last. An inquiry after the race into interference with Concentrate was productive of no result.

Grafton Hurdles to Prince of Orange Prinee of Orange, favourite for the Grafton Hurdles, was successful from Captain's Gift with Areade third and Sub-Editor fouxffh. Sub-Editor made
the early running from Prince of Orange. Trowbx-idge stopped at the first hurdle, interfering with Absent. Prince of Orange went into the lead from Captain's Gift, axxd these opened a gap for Billy Boy, Foxhound, Sub-Editor, High Pitch and Blacksmith. Arcade made a move up. Full Measure fell at the last hurdle and Tommy Chaplin was removed in the ambulance. After the placed horses came Billy Boy, Blacksmith, Absent, Foxhoupd and High' Pitch. Won by three quarters of a length. a head. Time 1.12 2-5. a race record. The Quorn Wins the Raihvay The smallest Railway field for years was"s3en out. The Quorn beat Tea Trader and Cadland who was twice bumped, Sunny Sky was fourth, but the Judge missed her and placed Exaggex'ation fourth. This made his fourth bad decision of the day. The Quorn soon ran to the front followed by Exaggeration, Tea Trader, Sunny Sky and Golden Wings, and Cadland raced Tea Trader. Cadland got a knock and was last into the straight. The Quorn came through to top1 off Tea Trader with Cadland who got another burnp at thq distance. The time was a record. NURSERY HANDICAP Of £250; 5 fur. . 3— DOLE, 8.8— R. Reed 1 1 — FRACAS, 8.2— Eastwood .... 2 5— GAY SETON, 8.12— McTavish 3 Also started: 6 Coronis, 7.12; 4 Arise, 7.9; 2 Alignxnent, 7.3; 7 Gold Poclcet, 7.3; 4 Pelagia, 7.2. Won by a length; a head. Time, 59sec. Dole in the Nux-sery Dole won the Nursery from end to end. Dole hopped out from Coronis, and Arise, led to the turn from Pelagia, Gay Seton, Fracas, Gold Poclcet and won by a length froxn Fracas with Gay Setoxx third, Pelagia, Arise and Gold Poeket following. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP Of £350; 1 xxxile. 3— L'ALLEGRO, 7.3— Wiggins .... 1 1— SILVER SCORN, 8.5— Eastwood 2 2— KOROKIO, 8.3— Reed 3 Also started: 6 King's Archex-, 8.2; 8 Merry Darnon, 8.0; 5 Lord Val, 7.9; 4 Chromadyne, 7.9; Chief Joy 7.8; 9 Llaxxore, 7.0. Silver Scorn's First Defeat The hitherto undefeated Silver Scorn went down to the Waikato promoted haclc, L'Allegro, who won after being in front at the distance. Merry Damon hopped out, but L'Allegro went to the front from Korokio, who was stopped by a bump and was lcnocked back to last. Chromadyne, Lord Val, Silver Scorn, Chief Joy. L'Allegro was joined in the lead by King's Archer and ran up to the turn where Silver Scorn came up headed by L'Allegro, but at the distance 1 beat her by' a length with Korokio, last into . the straight, a length back third, Llanore, who finished in the .same place in last year's race, was fourth, followed by Lord Val, Chromadyne. King's Archer, Chief Joy. Chromadyne has improved.
