COLLECTING RATES

CQQK COUNTY SUGGESTS A CHARGE ON LAND PRODUCE Gisborne, Thursday. That county rates should be a first charge upon returns from the land instead of being subject to claims under stoclc mortgages or moneys owing to the Lands Department or the State Advances Office, is contained in a report which was presented to the Coolc County Council yesterday by its finance committee. The committee recommended that the Prime Minister and local members of Parliament be approached and again urged to bring down legislation for derating farm lands, and suggested that this be accomplished either by increasing the petrol tax to a sufiicient amount to cover the cost of the maintenance of roads and meeting interest on roading loans, or alternatively by providing- for counties receiving the first charge on all returns from land, including wool, stock, and cream, it being considered inequitable that other interests should receive prior consideration. The report was adopted unanimously.
