THE BUTTER MARKET

MR. PARLANE'S VIEWS NEED FOR CLOSE ATTENTION TO QUALITY OF OUR PRODUCT. PROGRESS IN AUSTRALIA. Discussing the position of the butter market on his return from a visit to Australia, Mr. C. J. Parlane, of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., told the Hamilton Press yesterday that dairy companies were interesting themselves very keenly in th'e matter of quality of dairy products; cpnsiderable sums of money were being spent in equipping factories with the most up-to-date plant, while an effort was also being made to interest the dairyfarmers in the matter of inistalling efficient sterilising plants on the farms for the puxpose of thoroughly clean, sing dairy utensils. In consequence, it would be necessary for the dairying interests in the Dominion to use every possible effort to further improvep the quality of dairy products, otherwise it was likely in th'e not far distant future we would lose the advantage in this respect that we at present enjoy. Mr. Parlane said the great need forimproved marketing methods was now ' engaging the attention of some of the leaders of the dairying interests in Australia, some of these gentlemen being thoroughly convinced that the present method of individual companies selling either ca.f. or f.o.b. was having a disastrou© effect on the general overseas price level, and were firmly of the opinion that pven allowing for the present economic position, much higher prices than at present obtained could be secured if the product was marketed in a more efficient and businesslilce manner. The dairying interests associated with Empire Dairies were keen in their appreciation of the excellent service rendered by that organisation, and some of the associated companies had specially featured this in their balance-sheets recently issued to their suppliers.
