STOP TINKERING

Just what Mr. Forbes actually means by his reference to the diffipult times ahead and the possibijity of a New Year session to deal with interest rates, is not quite clear. He tells us that unless conditions improve it will be necessary to call Parliament together to consider a reduction in the burden of interest. But why a special session ? Ever since the Coalition Government took office the most urgent demands have been made for some comprehensive action to deal with the interest question, but without avail. Admittedly there has been tinkering with the subject, but the only result has been to cause additional unrest and neryousness among investors. It is tinje the Forbes-Coates combination realised that the welfare of the Dominion requires something more than thisj tinkering to re-

store stability to the financial position. We should attack the interest problem by a coiirageous, comprehensive conversion policy — a policy of statesmen and not a policy of petty overcounter bond salesmanship. It is understood that Mr. Downie Stewart is to give finance his immediate attention upon resuming his duties in the Dominion. It is to be hoped he has returned with some new ideas and* that he may light up the darkness in which his Government is at present groping.
