Founder of Rotary Genuine regret will he felt by mem- | bers of the Rotorua Rotary Club at the sudden death in Auckland on Monday last of Mr. Charles Rhodes, at the age of 72 years. It was when visiting Rotorua with Sir George Fowlds in 1928 that the late Mr. Rhodes was actively connected with the introduction of the Rotary movement in Rotorua. After much energetic and enthusiastic work among the businessmen of the town the club was formed with Mr. T. McDowell, then Mayor of Rotorua, as its fii-st president. Due to his efforts ,and in association with Sir George Fowlds, the deceased geRtleman was responsible for the formation of 21 of the 23 clubs in existence in Neiv Zealand.

The Ubiquitous Bowser "There is a bowser for every 28 motor vehicles in New Zealand," says Mr. A. Tyndall, Main Highways Board engineer. "The cost of dis- i tribution in New Zealand is greater per gallon than the retail cost to the user in California."

Concert at Reporoa With their usual ready response in assistance of a good cause, a concert party apranged by the Rotorua Women's Club and Returned Soldiers' Association travelled to Reporoa last evening and gave an entertainment I to raise funds for dental treatment I of Reporoa children. Their enterprise was amply rewarded by an attendance which filled the Reporoa Hall and enabled a sum of £13 16s to be handed to the Reporoa branch of the W.D.F.U. The concert programme comprised very enjoyable items by Messrs J. D. A. Painton (violin), J- H. Thomas (songs), Misses J. Urquhart (dances) , Miss IC. Hall and Miss R. Owens (song) and duet with Mr. J, H. Thomas, and elocutionary items by Mrs. Walsh. In addition a novelty item on a Stroh violin, built in 1760, by Mr. Painton, was roundly applauded and a one act play "Widows" by Misses Hitchens, Kelly and Dillon was also well received. Interpersed with items, community singing promoted a care-free spirit and an enjoyable evening closed with the thanks of the W.D-F.U. expressed by the president, Mrs. Brown, in appreciation of the efforts of the Rotorua visitors.
