EXHIBITION CHESS
ATTEMPT TO BREAK RECORD FOR SIMULTANEOUS s GAMES ROTORUA CLUB'S ENTERPRISE Ghess players will he interested to learn that Mr. Maurice E. Goldstein, the recognised international champ- * ion, is to revisit Rotorua on Saturday evening. He has arranged to play allcomers at Mr. Duncan Steele's sample rooms (entrance from Hinemoa Street opposite the R. M. Garage). His Worship the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) is being asked to welcdme Mr. Goldstein at 7.30 p.m. and to oppose him 'in play at one of the hoards. It is probable that many visiting players will take part in the contest ^ as invitations have been Sent to six, neighhouring cluhs and any lo'cal players who are prevented from early attendance may engage in play'up to as late as 9 o'clock. An attempt is being made to beat the New Zealand record for simultaneous play which stands at 41 games. This number was played at one time hy Mr. Boris Kostick, in Auckland, during his 1924 tour. Although it is not generally known there are some seventy local cbess players. If only half this number meet Mr. Goldstein it should be pos^felqjjt with the assistance of the cluh's* invited to be present, to establish a new record. The rooms, which have been kindly lent by Mr. Steele for'th^ occasion, are eminently suitahle for the purpose. They can accommodate many onlookers who wiil he most yelcome. The rooms previously used for exhihition have only been suffieiently large for the players. No complaint can he found in this direction with the arrangements for the location of Saturday's display. It would be appreciated if those players who are taking part in the mateh, would bring their own hoard and chessmen. If possible, the mateh committee Would appreciat'e the chessmen being deposited at the rooliis on Saturday afternoon ' so that they may be set up in readiness for the evening's play. Members of the cluh are invited to assist the committee by attending at the rooms on Saturday afternoon as a good deal of preliminary work is entailed in these exhibitions. Mr. Goldstein will have the first move at each board. ,
