LAND CLASSIFICATION
OPOTIKI COUNTY YIEWS ON REVALUATION SCHEME. A letter received by the Opotiki ! County Council last meeting from th'e Waitotara County Council suggested that the council support a revision of valuation of land whereby all lands would be divided into three classes, so that first-class land in each riding should be valued at the same price. The work was to be carried out by the county ecunciis aiid the district valuer. Gr. Martin: That is practically coming back to rating on capital valuef Cr. Black considered that the scheme was practically contrary to the council's own scheme. The ehairman outlined the scheme brought down by the Opotiki County Council at the Counties Association Conference for securing equitable rating. Cr. Martin asked for further particulars of the council's scheme. The ehairman explained that the council's scheme practically did away with separate ridings and all firstclass lands were rated at the same value througho.ut the whole county, the method applying similarly with second-class and third-class lands. The principal objection raisad at the conference had been the difficulty in arriving at a valuation; to this he had replied instancing the method administered by drainage boards and Native lands boards. Cr. N'eilson's view was that if revaluation came in the second and third-class lands needed far bigger reduction than first-class lands. The matter was then dr'opped.
