CROWN LAND RATES
OPOTIKI COUNCIL THINKS PRESENT POSITION SERIOUS. The matter of the rating of Grown and Native lands was brought up by ; Cr. Neilson at the meeting of the ; Opotiki County Council. He stated that it would be a very serious matter for the district if all Native lands . were to be treated as Crown lands as far as rating was concerned. It seemed to him unfair that wh'ere the natives were mortgaging their land as security for loans that public money should be expended upon them. Th'e ehairman concurred. Cr. Black mentioned, that it seemed peculiar that the Native Department should admit liabil, ity for the special , rates. He had been , informed tha,t when the Natives went to Sir Apirana Ngata he had told them that tfiey could not be sued for two years a,nd to "taihoa" till then, and then see him again. A Councillor: And that 's the typ.e of Mimister we've got, is it? The Clerk (Mr. Merry) said that he understood that the rates would even- ! tually be paid. Opotiki News Continued on Page 3.
