TWO MEN ON TRIAL FOR WELLINGTON BURGLARY

Wellington, Thursday. Particulars of an extensive jewellery robbery from Laughlan and Company's premises, Countenay Place about midnight on Sunday, June 26, were given in the Supreme Court today, hefore the Chief Justice, Sir Miehael Myers and a jury. The burglars were surprised, leaving behind them a jemmy, a saw, a brace and half-ton lorry. Two bags of jewellery were left standing near the lorry. The safe had been moved ready to take away. Two days later, Edwin George Valentine Roberts, aged 20, labourer, and Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 36, labourer, were arrested at New Plymouth. Mr. C. Evans-Scott, Jprosecuting for the Crown, said that conversations in the cell at New Plymouth overheard by a constable, would be related to the court. The missing jewellery was valued by Mr. William Joseph Laughlan, manager of.the branch, at £317 19s 6d. Detective Meildejohn gave evidence as to the arrest at New Plymouth. Letton was also indicted for breaking and entering Schneideman's premises and stealing clothing valued at £121 15s. The cases are being heard separately.
