Auckland, Thursday. The premises of the Newmarket branch of the National.Banlc of New Zealand, Broadway, were entered on W ednesday " night and £2300 stolen fr.om-the-safe. The burglary was discovered this morning and immediately ireported' to. the police. • Detectives were engaged on the case thronghout the day and at seven o'clock this evening, an arrest- was made. . .v ; When members of, the bank staff arrived at the branch this morning) there was no sign of the door having been forced. However when-'the' saf e was. opened, it- was found that the money placed there on Wednesday night was missing. There was no way of ascertaining how the safe had been opened. • At seven o'clock this evening, Norman- G; Smith, bank clerk, was arrested by Detective Hunt, and charged with breaking and entering the premises of the National Bank of New Zealand ■ at Newmarket. Smith will appear in the Police Court in the morning. It is understood that the whole of the stolen money has. been recovered.
