COST OF DEFENCE
Rec. Oct. 31, 9.5 p.m. Paris, October 31. M. Herriot, speaking at Poitiers, en route to Spain, said he helieved there was good cause for hope that the new French disarmament plan could prove the rallying point for all cour- , ageous minds. Ref erring to the French budget crisis, he admitted that the defieit for 1933 would be £96,000,000. The Government had already saved £41,500,000 by funding the internal debt, £11,500,000 by reducing the military appropriation, although one-fourth of the total budget went to national defence.
