UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEMES

A considerable amount of discussion took place during the meeting of the Whakatane Unemployment Committee on Tuesday evening regarding the proposed new scheme which is really an amalgamation of the old No. 2, and the present No. 5 schemes. Cpinions had been obtained from the borough council and the county council. The former were not in favour of the introduction of the scheme while the latter asked that it b.e given a trial. Mr. W. Sullivan, chairman, expressed the opinion that the scheme was merely another palliative and would prove to be quite useless as a means of relieving the present unemployment situation. Other members supported the chairman. The majority of the committee eonsidered that the scheme generally would have a tendency to further reduce wages to the worker. A motion was carried to the effect that the Unemployment Committee oppose the scheme being introduced into this district.
