Rec. Sept. 16, 5.0 p.m. Rugby, Sept. 15. Mr. A. Henderson, at the National ; Peace Council luncheon said: — -• | "I cannot bring niyself to believe f that the statesmen who will assemble at Geneva in the next few days will be prepared to take the nesponsibility of encouraging a competitive race in armaments and the inevitable danger ; of war arising from the existence of large armies, navies and air forces. j "The apprehension that exists in j no way causes surprise, hut I do not ' fully sh'are that apprehension. "Becaus'a I am convinced that failure of this disarmament conference would he a veritable disaster in the life of Europe and the world, I refuse to cpntemplate failure." Mr. Henderson referring to Germany's claim to equality in armaments, said he thought they could go forward with their work next week feeling that with goodwill and conciliation this incid'ent could be settled to the advantage, not only of Germany and the vanquished countries, but to Europe and th'e world.
