SCOW SHELTERING
Our -Own Correspondent)
ROUGH SEAS IN BAY
(From
Opotiki, Friday. A severe earthquake occurred at 1.25 a.m. this morning and a minor shake followed, but no damage was done. The seas on the coast are exceptionally rough and several trawle.rs are sheltering at the Whakatane wharf. The Northern Company's office reported this morping that po word had been received as to the whereabouts of the o.v. Toa, which is probably sheltering somewhere near the Cape. The bar is very rough, arid on present appearances, there is no chance of the scow berthing to-mor-
row". The conclusion of the main shock, which finished with a prolonged circular motion, was followed by a great roaring ,sound from the sea which then became quite cairn. It was noticeable that following each shake rain fell for a time and then ceased until the next shock. Although little serious damage was reported, the swaying movement caused water from hot water supply cisterps to seep through the ceffing of some residences, but no fallen chimneys are reported. In several instances stocks of goods were dislodged from th'e shelves of shops, grocers being the worst sufferers. Following the heaviest shake the 'electric power supply failed for a ; time, but was quickly restored. Af Whakatane the shake was also felt severely and lasted for nearly 40 seconds, a second movement occurring shortly afterwards, hut no damage was done. The 'quake was felt to a lesser degree at tauranga and minor shakes occurred up to 2 a.m.
