Gisborne, Monday. Some ten days ago, after the visit to Gisborne of Mr. J. S. Jessep, de-puty-chairman of the Unemployment Board, orders were issued and a ballot drawn to send unemployed married men to camp in the country and work under Public Works conditions,
clearing scrub on backblock farms. A proposal was also made to send single men, but no ballot was drawn for them. Forty or 50 married men ! were drawn in the ballot, but refused j to go, and the single men also turned i down the proposal. | The unrest culminated in a public j meeting held in the Opera House this I evening when over 1000 men were ! present. The Mayor, Mr. D. 1W. Coleman, M.P., presided and after ad- ! dresses had been delivered by sev- ! eral speakers, the following resolution was carried unanimously: "That this public meeting of Gisborne citizens declares unconditional disapproval of camps for relief workers, married or single, and hereby calls upon the Government to curb the tyranny of the Unemployment Board, and declares that all volunteers reqitired could be obtained if the Government offered continued employment a,nd wages to allow a decent standard of living."
