Carterton* Mon(jfly. The Elgar estate is the heaviest loser. The manager, Mr. Stuart Rejd, estimates the loss at 1500 sheep p.pd 100 head of cattle, many being skinned before being buried and burned. Others are in positions of such difficulty of access that nothing can he done with them. Railway communication with Wellington has been partially re-estqb-lislied. The gap in the Tauherenikau^ bridge at Fernside has been temporarily bridged. Engines are not allowed to cross, but "kiek" a string of carriages across to a waiting engine. Some semblance of a time-table is now assured.
