LADY MEMBERS OF PUPUKE GOLF CLUB GO TO LAW Auckland, Thursday. Judgment for the plaintiffs was delivered by His Honour, Mr. Justice l Herdman, in an action in which four ! women, members of the Pupuke Goli_ l Club, alleged that their suspensior] • from membership by the committee^ ' was ultra vires and void. 1 ' The main point at issue was whe- ! ther the by-law prohibiting worner s members from play before 3 o'clocl ; on Saturday afternoons could be en5 forced. The defendants said the bylaw was made to preserva the greem - and allow the men members to condue i their competitions without eongestioi; ) or interference, j l His Honour said whatever may hav(l - been the main purpose of the- com|; 3 mittee, there was no doubt tha| ; incidentally the by-law restricted th^ l playing rights of a section of th; . club's membership. j Later the Judge said the commit - tee's real object seemed to have bee: - ' to give the men players special facili 3 ties on Saturdays. He decided that th ■. club's rules did not go to the lengU s of enabling the committee "to make - by-law which benafitted one section o.: r the members only, and restricted th', playing rights of another section. h
