TOURNEY CONCLUDES REDHEAD (ROTORUA) BEATS LUSK (AUCKLAND) IN FINAL PAYITT WINS SECRETARY'S Play was continued in the semifinals -of the Veterans' Gup and Secretary's Trophy events on the Arikikapakapa links- yesterday morning, under wet weather and playing conditions. The first to go out were Pavitt and Butts the former winning by 4 up and 3 to play. Next to eome in were Smith and Wilkie, Sniith eliminating the Rotorua man by 4 and 3, leaving Pavitt and Smith to play off for the Secretary's Trophy. There was a good deal of interest in the semi-final of the Veteran's Cup between Lusk (Auckland) and Hutchison (Gisborne) for the latter had carried off both bogey rounds the previous day, and was playing well abovj his handicap, whilst the steadiness of Lusk was so pronounced that he was freely supported. At the seventh, Lusk was one up and he got another at the eighth. However from there on, Hutchison improved and the match j went to the 20th where Luslc won one up. Phalan and Kedheau al.-.o had a tight struggle reaching the 18th all square- Redheuu li.iaiiy won by a putt on the 19th. The final was sternly fought out, Redhead (Rotorua) eventually winning on the 19th green. He certainly had all the luclc that was going, but be played sound golf. Lusk's golf was solid, but he was unlucky, being stymied four times in the first ten holes and lipping three times when he wanted the putt for a win. He also found bunkers three times with his second. Redhead, however, holed two fine putts which really gave him the match. At the close of the tourney the prizes were presented by Mrs. F. W. Wilkie, wife of the patron and donor j of the Veterans' Cup. „ The President, Dr. S. H. Hay, in a happy speech welcomed the visitors and expressed the pleasure it had been to entertain them and to cater for them. He spoke of the good work of the secretary, Mr. C. W. S. Gee, and regretted his indisposition, also j paying a tribute to Mr. E. La Trobe • Hill and Mr. Banks for their work, j as well as to all the other members of the committee who had assistod. Mr. Wilkie, as patron of the club, said that he and his fellow members ! were asked to make the tournament the best in New Zealand. He was cer- j tain they had the best course for veterans, for it was not too long nor was it too strenuous. He also remarked that it had no bunkers — a statem'ent which was greetod with hoots of derision. Two things, said Mr. Wilkie, were outstanding in the case of this tournament — the co-operation which the veterans gave to the committee, and the high standard of golf which they had shown. It appeared to him, said the patron, that as a result of the tournament, the handicapping system throughout New Zealand had worked out very fairly, and he had been told by a man who really should know, that the final played between Lusk and Redhead was the finest ever seen upon the course. He congratulated the winnn*, Mr. Redhead, on the gaining of the cup for the second time, and in humorous vein sugges ed that it was clearly the duty of the winner fo fill it twiee with champagne. H- tlr n ealle 1 upon Mrs. Wilkie to present Ihe Ircph'es.
