WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL MAY CEASE RELIEF WORKS

-By Telegrapli — Copyright)

Wellington, Mop.day. An urgent appeal has been made by the Wellington City Couneil to the Government for additional assistance for unemployment relief. It ir. feared that unless further finances are made available the cou neil will be unable to continue its rt lief worlc beyond the end of next mon.fh. For several months the couneil Las

been doing everything possible to make the most of the funds at its disposal. It was forced to approach the Government some time ago in ordcr to secure authority for the use of £13,000 which had been set aside for worlt on the western access seheme. It is understood the cost ef supervision and materials is being met at present out of moneys that will not last more than another monfh. The couneil has already spent over £27,000 this year. It is unable to continue spending. The position will be reviewed by the Unemployment Board early this week. Several thousand families are dependcnt on relief worlc in Wellington. Although there is little lilcelihood that they will be left without any help, their serious position calls for immediate attention.
