NEGOTIATIONS FAIL

Rec. Aug. 28, 5.5 p.m. Augby, August 27. Negotiations for the settlement of the Lancashire cotton strike were abortive, and operatives have been instructed to act upon the strike notices. It is not expected that the strike will cause a coinplete stoppage. Stalybridge, Hyde, Redcliffs, Manchester, Todmorton, Rochdale, and Oldham have a temporary working agreement which is in. operation at these centres. The Minister of Labour, Sir Henry Betterton, says that intervention at this stage is not likely to serve any useful purpose.
