-By Telegraph — Copyrlght)
London, August 27. Speaking on board the Empress of Britain at Southampton upon his return from Ottawa, Mr. J. H. Thomas, Secretary of State said. — "Under the guise of card parties I have been talking with the 'Irish delegation every day. I had hoped that my proposals would have resulted in a settlement there, but I am quite sure they have cleared the ground and the discussions have done good. I certainly did not shut the door to any avenue of peace." Dublin is mystified over Mr. j. H. Thomas's statement, and Mr. de Valera and his colleagues are silent. Mr. de Valera's press organ discourages optimism. The results of the annual sheep sale in the Meath County are only about one-seventh of the minimum receipts of former years. The Irish Associated Railways have given notice of reductions in wages. A banner, at a boycott of British goods meeting at Dublin bore the inscripfcion "burn everything British ex- ■ cept coal." The Government is establishing a bureau to receive complaints regarding excessive prices of food, clothing and fuel. Lord Beaverbrook is touring Ireland, visiting Belfast and Dublin.
