Whiteroft, his team mate, then took the lead and won in 298 minutes, four seconds, averaging 73 2-3 miles an hour. Dyston followed, 83 seconds later, then came Hall and Earl Howe. Nearly 500,000 people, including Miss Joan Richmond, witnessed the thrilling race, which involved several crashes. Thirty-two drivers started and eight finished. Major Gardiner, a cripple, broke his leg. Sir Henry Burton broke the lap record, covering the circuit in 592 seconds.
