NOT FIXED QUOTA
VARY WITH THE MARKETS Rec. Aug. 19, 10.5 j'.m. Ottawa, August 18. The meat decision this morning depends on the choice of one of many sets of figures placed before the delegations from Australia and New Zealand. The recommendation is that Great Britain's 1931 import figures should be the basis instead of the 1932 imports, which are smaller. The quota should not be regarded as a fixed restriction, but may be varied according to changes in market conditions. There is the strongest possibility that the restrictions will not seriously affect the Argentine, particularly if the prices show a natural rise, which is generally predicted. Australia and New Zealand are taking a long view and are prepared to even a "stand still" quota, keeping the Argentine quantities at the same level instead of reducing her imports. It is also suggested that the quota should not be drastie. It might be imposed with' minimum force for the first year, gradually increasing over a period of years, during which Australia and New Zealand could be steadily increasing their output. The British delegation dinner to the Canadian Cabinet was followed by~a reception ball, to which everybody connected with the confsrence was invited. It is claimed as the greatest social function of the conference.
