KNOCKED DOWN BY TAXI IN WELLINGTON STREET

Wellington, Thursday. Medical evidence not being available until to-morrow, his Honour was unable to close the inquest to-day *nto the death of Ronald Emms, aged 51 years, who was knocked down in Tinakori Road on the evening of August 3 by a taxi driven by John Will am Ashford, and who died in hospital three days later. Ashford said that at the time of the accident he was proceeding at 20 miles an hour and felt a slight bump and thought that he had struck i stone or a rut, when he noticed somebody sliding across the bitumen. He pulled and was horrified tp and a child lying unconscious. He did not know where the child had come t'rom. It was raining at the time and /isibility was very bad on either side of the headlights. "The only explanation I can offer," be said, "is that the child stepped Tom the footpath direetly in front of the taxi and was too short tp :ome into the line of vision." Other witnesses in the vicinity at the time, said they did not actually -ee the child struck. Visibility was bad at the time. The inquest was adjourned.
