Racing Records Lost. It is understood that sotne valuable racing records were among the property destroyed in yesterday morning's fire. Work in Haupapa Street. Yesterday morning, the Rotorua Borough Couneil workmen re-com-menced the laying of eoncrete flagstones on the footpath in Haupapa street. It is the intention of the couneil to complete the footpath on the northern side of the street as an experimental woi'k, after which the couneil will decide the advisability of eontinuing the work in others parts of the town area. Ledge Social. At the conclxision ©f the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Manchester Unity, I.O.O.F. No. 7518 Lo.dge on Monday evening last, a social, | dance and 500 tournament /was held to entertain the friends of members. For the dance, musical numbers were played by Bros. Morris, Dixon and Mulligan, and a programme of dancing, interspersed with vocal items by Bros. Harris, was enjoy ed by the flfty members present. A Meeting, Not an Argument. There was an unofficial meeting in Tutanekai Street last evening of a borough councillor and the borough solicitor. In fact they met with some force as their cars collided. Subsequently they went into committee to deal with finance and set up a committee of two to investigate the damage to the councillor's car . . . parts - of which littered the street. A resolution that it was both their faults was • carried unanimously and the meeting adjourned. Value of Nightwatchman. If last night's fire pointed one moral it was that the work of the nightwatchman is extremely valuablev This is the second occasion upon which his presence has resulted in the obviating of very serious fires and the principles of supporting his appointment is one which should surely need no recommendation. The last time he saved a block from being burnt, three extra members rallied to his help. It will be interesting to find out how many will realise the position this time. Visitors to Rotorua. Next weelc-end, Rotorua will be visited by cyclists from the Waikato Cycle Club, who on Saturday afternoon will engage in a challenge race over a course of 35 miles against members of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The race will be held over a course from Arawa Park to the turn-off to Waiotapu and back, and it is expected that, in view of the improved form now being displayed by the local riders, a good contest will be provided. In order to satisfactorily control the race, and to provide for accidents, it will be necessary for a motor lorry to follow the riders. The secretary (Mr. C. J. Casey) would be pleased to reeeive offers of assistance in this direction, the cost of petrol to be defrayed by the club. Cheerful Farmer. Depressions cannot damp the cheerfulriess of one Canterbury farmer, at any rate. He was met in Christchurch the other morning, and at once attraeted a friend's attention because of the half-smile that never left his face. "It's a treat to find anyone looking so cheery," remarked the friend. "You must have heard a good one!" "I've heard a good one, all right!" responded the farmer. "Here it is." He produced an official-looking document from a pocket. It was an intimation that he was required to pay £8,000 on a mortgage. "And, said the farmer, "I haven't got 8,000 fatliings — that's why I'm grinning. I can't help grinning when I think of how the other fellow must be worrying . . ."
