SEWERAGE SYSTEM
Recently the Rotorua Borough Couneil declared a special drainage a,rea to be served by the new reticulation from the King Street pumping station, and ratepayers withiin this area are compelled to connect with the reticulation and pay the special rates imposed. Compulsory connection is being rigidly enforced, but
there appears to be ground for comment in one recent departure from the rule. An oil firm which has recently established a depot off Fenton Street and inside the special area, it is understood, has been given permission to construct a septic tank instead of reticulating under the general j sewerage scheme. An essential of a scheme such as this is that all ratepayers should make the necessary connections, for the more general the reticulation, the lower the cost per head. An individual ratepayer installing a septic tank instead of connecting with the drainage system, does so at his own cost, but an extension of these exceptions would plaee a heavier burden upon the ratepayers residing in the special rating area ,and who are compelled to link up with the scheme. No exceptions should be made and compulsory reticulation should be applied to all firms and persons within the area.
