BOROUGH COUNCIL
REGULAR MEETING NO FURTHER DISCUSSION UPON MR. TSCHOPP'S ENGAGEMENT. ROUTINE BUSINESS. At the meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council on Wednesday evening a letter was received from Mr. J. D.- Foley applying for a lease of the area of land approximately three acres in extent situated in Wairoa Road opposite Ti Street and adjoining the sepjsic tank. Mr. Foley stated he had the right to use this area for the last 16 years from the Resident Officer, and during that period fenced and kept in check the noxious weeds growing thereon in addition to> having ploughed part of it. The matter was referred to the drainage committee. Removal of Firewood. An application from Mr. J. J.King for permission to remove fallen dead manuka from the cemetery reserve at the end of Marguerite Street was referred to the reserves committee. Street Light Granted. Mr. T. J. Hickey, Malfroy Road West, wrote applying for a street light between the junction of Old Taupo Road, Malfroy Road and the Utuhina Bridge. This section of street was only a narrow footpath and was very dark. The application was granted. Refund of Fees. K Motors Ltd., wrote asking for a refund of £9 in traffic licenses for 12 vehicles. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) said that according to the Act, the company was not entitled to the refund. The section only referred to vehicles licensed in a motor omnibus district. The charges were levied under the borough by-laws, not under the Act. Cr. A. Smith said that the company had actually paid two charges. The Mayor explained that the fees were collected under ' the by-laws prior to the Act coming into operation on March 1, and there was no power to make a refund. The company will be advised accordingly. Mr. Tschopp's Engagement. A long letter was received from the secretary of the Rotorua Ratepayers' Association, advising ' that at a recent meeting of the association's executive, the matter of Mr. Tschopp's continued employment was discussed, and disapproval of the council's attitude in the matter expressed. Cr. Coleman expressed the opinion that the matter had been fully discussed and there was no reason to go over the question again. He mov.'d that the letter be received and the motion was carried. The council recently decided to circularise a number of interested local bodies requesting their support for the protest to the Government concerning the present system of apportioning heavy traffic license fees under the new transport regulations, and letters were received from the Te Puke Town Board, the Whakatane Borough Council, the Rotorua County Council, the Tauranga Borough Council, and the Tauranga County Council, advising that the present system had the approval of their councils, and that it was not eonsidered necessary that a eonference be held to discuss the apportionment of heavy traffic license fees. The letters were received and no further action talcen. Unused Truck. A request for a refund of heavy traffic fees for five months on a truck which had been laid up for repairs since December last was granted. Fence Line. A letter was received from Mr. G. H. French advising that it is his intention to renew the fence along the Utu Street boundary of Section 67, and suggesting that it would be a favourable opportunity to take back the fence line in order to conform with the borough requirements should the area be cut up for building purposes. Mr. French asked whether the council could assist him by defining the road boundary so that there might be no future disto the general committee with power turbance. The matter was referred to act.
