Rec. June 14, 9.55 p.m. NEWCASTLE, Tuesday. Nine police and about 20 unemployed pickets were injured very sever'ely in a desperate anti-eviction fight at Highfield to-day. The arresfs total 30. The battle started when a small army of police, descended on "a house with the intention of evicting the' tdnants. The unemployed were fn possession of the cottage and were armed with all sorts of weapons, chiefly pointed picks. The police rnshed the place, hrandt ishing batons, and were met b'y'fiefce opposition. " Blows were exchanged, which felled one after another, ' accompanied by the wildest shouting ' and cursing. It was not long before a number qf the combatants were oii the ground hleeding and insensible. Many hlood bespattered men raii "from the house taking refuge in the crowd of onlookers. The lot of.the police was .unenvi- ' able, hnt they soon had the upper hand. A brick thrown at a policeinah, missed its mark and felled an onloofcer. The battle ended' almost as suddenly as it started. Ambulance men worked fqr an hqur rendqring first aid and cqnveying the injured te hospital.
