interesting lecture REY. McHIARMID DESCRIRES THRILLING ADVENTURES OF NILE TRIP PEOPLE SEVEN FEET TALL. A large crowd assembled at St. John's Hall, Opotiki, .on Wednesday evening last to hear a very interesting and instructive lecture by the Rev. McD'iarmid, B.A., M.B.E. The subject chosen by the , spealcer was "To the Source of the Nile and Beyond.". The Honourable J'. B- Gow toolc the chair. A pianoforte solo was rendered by Miss Elza Fleming and a vocal solo by Mrs. Duff (accompanied by Mrs. HiP'ord), after which the Hon. J. B. Gow introduced the speaker The Rev. McDiarmid gave a very interesting de'scription of a trip taken by himself, by rail, steamer and on foot, from Alexandria to Mombassa, . a distance of 4000 jniles. The lecture was full of interesting references to the peculiar customs of the native people and the thrill of hunting raaneating lions. He also made mention of the Dinka tribe, the tallest pbople in the world, the majorlty pf Whom are 7 feet tall. The flood regiqn of the Nile, where the riyer is blocked i>y floating islands, the conve'yance of news by native drums ahd many other unusual incidents of the trip weye touched upon. At the close of the lecture, Mr. Moore gave a vocal solo accompanied by Miss E. Fleming. In moving a vote of thanks, which was warmiy carried, Mr. Gow mentioned that Mr. McDiarmid would give similar leetures on future occasiohs.
