WHAKATANE, Monday. Archibald Whyte, aged about 60 _ years, was found dead in bed a Pikowai near Matata on Saturday. Deceased was employed as a surfaceman by the Whakatane County Council. He was a well known identity between Matata and Otamarakau Deceased, who owned extensive properties in Taranaki, was apparently quite contented, Iiving in a dug-out cut into the hill on the Matata Road. He was well known to travellers as the "Mayor of Pikowai." An inquest will be held before Mr G. A. Brabant, to-morrow.
