noted waikato breeder gains award for year SERVICE TO AGRICULTURE

-By Telfgr.anh— Copyright) .

HAMILTON, Monday. The announcement that Mr. J. M. Ranstead, of Matangi, has been awarded the Bledisloe Medal as a rer cognition of the groatest service rendered to the agricultural community during the year by an ex-student of Lincoln College, Canterbury, will be regarded as a triumph for supporters of the milking Shorthorn breed of cattle. Mr. Ranstead is perhaps the most noted breeder of this type in the Dominion and it is presumably for his success in this direction that the award has been given. In addition to his work as a breeder of Shorthorn eattle, Mr. Ranstead pion'eered the practice of ensilage-making in the Dominion, and by his efforts contributed largely to the present popularity of this form of husbandry. During the last three years Mr Ranstead has been closely associated with Dr. H. E. Annett, of Matangi, in his experiments with fertilisers and grassland management. Mr. Ranstead is one of five brothers, all of whom are farming at Ma- " tangi and are well-known breeders of milking Shorthorns. He has coneentrated on this type of cattle for the last 25 years and his herd is one of the best in New Zealand.
