JUDGE'S SEVERE COMMENT IN FALSE PRETENCES ' CASE BOOKMAKER SENTENCED

AUCKLAND, Fridriy. Philip Fielding Farnworth, who was found guilty of obtaining £20 from a man on the false representation that the money was to be giveri to detectives in order to ensure immunity from interference with a bookmaking business, was sentenced. to-. day to a year's imprisonment tvit& hard labour. Counsel for accused moved to quash the conviction, on the ground that legally no false pretences had been proved. Mr. Justice Herdriian said accu'Sed had represented that he was ih a position to obtain immunity irbin interference, which was false iri its'elf. The applicatiori was disriiissed. The Jndge, in sentencing accused said he was a shady chrifaeter. In this case he had associatbd with a man Whose iritelligence was iiot Very high, and represented that hb Was in a position to eorrupt police bfiicers who Were reputable and beyond Suspicion.
