BACK NUMBERS
EXPERTS AGAINST DEMPSEY'S RETURN TO PADDED RING. A New York message states thati a report from Reno concerning Jack Dempsey, ex-world's champion heavyweight boxer, has aroused nation-wide interest, espeeially among the scores of thousands who have confidently looked forward to the redoubtable "Manassa Mauler" appeairing in the ring to make a bid for his lost laurels. It now transpires that boxing experts are advising Dempsey to quit. During his reeent sparring tour it was abundantly evident that the "Mauler" was only a shadow of his former self and inferior men had outpointed him. The determination, which carried Dempsey so high up in boxing fame will not permit him to hang up the gloves. He insists that he is steadily coming back and believes that he will be fit to stage another combat for the world's championship. Experts, however, shake their heads, and are unimpressed by his persistency. "He's a back number now and the first good man he meets will prove it," they say. However, Dempsey 's wonderfully sustained popularity has meant crowded attendances wherever he boxed during his recent tour, and he has now many thousand dollars • to help him along during these ba'd times.
