GISBORNE, MondayManutuke Maori t'ownship, ahout F miles from Gisborne, has suffered a heavy loss in the past few days, m the deaths of two tfibal" leaders, t| seeond occurring uhdet unusual cncumstances. . The first death was that of Dertl Tapunga, about 90 years of age, a veteran of the Maori wars. A tang was held and several parties of visi - ing natives' from distant pas atten ed the cerernony. The visitors wer addressed by leaders of the tribes. _ ^ While walking up and down tn marae, extending a welcome of , native visitors, and extolling the vd tues of the 'deceased, the spokesmf for the Manutuke people, Mokitaran^ Pohatu, aged 67 years, "suddenly stopped in his speech* and fell f°r^a1! ' and died before medical aid , „ procured. Pohatu was the son oi , loyalist family and a warm n|^ere of Church work. He was twice ® , ried, hoth his first "wife and his wldV being first cousins' of the late baQy Carroll. . •
