Amusing Anecdotes

In the course of a recent visit to the fighting pa, Popoia, near Kaitaratahi, members of the Tairawhiti Association were entertained hy a number of amusing anecdotes attaching to the different points of in-ter-est about the pa. One story told was a version of an incident linked with an inter-tribal fight, in which Popoia suffered one of its rare suceessful assaults. One well-known warrior among the ddfenders, it was related, realising with his comrades that for the time being the game was up, resolved on the desperate expedient of hurjihg himself down the steep precipice on the northern side of the pa, where flowed the Waipaoa River in those days. The attackers, hoping to intercept him at tlje foot of the precipice, strove to delay his leap by reference to his family obligations. "What of y.our wife and 'children?". they called to th'e escapee. Balancing himself for the dangerous leap, the warrior pausei to remark significantly: "I can get others," then dashed over the hrow of ' the precipice. Tbe s'ardonic humour of the retort probably^ added no further peril to the situation of the warrior's family.
