— By Te] eg' aph — Ccpyrlght).
WELLINGTON, Thursday. A statement regarding the position of the railway finances was made to-day by Mr. P. G. Roussell, general manager. "The latest railway figures are for four weeks ended January 30, and they show an improvement in the nett revenue of £24,810," said Mr. Roussell. Results for the period for 44 weeks of the current financial year from April 1, 1931, to January 30, 1932, show a nett revenue of £530,946 against £43-9,803 last year, an improvement in the nett revenue of the 44 weeks of the current financial year as compared with the corresponding term of last year of £91,143. "As the working expenses last year for the same 44 weeks amounted to £5,833,212, and this year £4,759,202," continued Mr-. Roussell, "it will be seen that the nett decrease in the working expenses of the department is now well over a million. The actual figures were £1,074,010. "Our revenue is still showing evidence of the effect of the "depression; the four weekly amount being £78,628 less tlian for the sam'e period last year, but the decline is eonsiderably less than the average decline talcen over the whole 44 weeks of the year, while the decrease in the total expenditure of £1,074,010 has enabled the department to show the nett improvement indicated above, viz., £91,143. Almost the whole of this amount had been produced during the last f oiir weeks, Mr. Roussell said, and the result certainly gave some assurance of future stabilitv.
