HOLIDAYS ENDING

ROTORUA PRIMARY SCHOOL RE-ASSEMBLES ON MONlDAY IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS The Rotorua District Primary School will commence the . first term of the 1932 school year on Monday next, February 1, when the children will re-assemble after the summer . holi 1 days. In the interests of the pupils' health and comfort and to facilitate the work of the school considerable advantage of the opportunity offering to get work done at a minimum of expense by the utilisation of unemployed relief workers, has been taken by the School Committee and several much needed improvements have been completed at the school during the holidays. A portion of the grounds has been levelled and cleared and the old tree stumps, which had previously been a nuisance as well as an eyesore, have now been removed and burned. The steep bank, extending from near the western entrance to the' northern boundary has been graded, and will later he sown in grass to make an attractive sloping lawn.

The old five strand wire fence surrounding the playing area of the school grounds was recently dismantled and a combination rustic and seven wire fence erected, giving a much neater appearance to the property from both outside and inside. Repairs have also been made to the fences around the school residence and the horse paddock, making both animal proof and tidy. Other work which it is intended to carry out soon after the school year commences is the building of a frame over the infants' sand tray. An deciduous creeper will then be planted around the edge of the structure so that the children may be sheltered from the sun in the heat of summer yet not be shaded in the winter., A summer shelter to be erected near the front of the school in the form of a pergola, and . an 'additional shelter to be provided by the making of a suitable frame to support. the overhanging branches of an oak tree, thus making it suitable for the children to sit under during the luncheon and play hours are also to be provided.

The chairman of the school comr mittee, Mi*. C. A. Clarke, said that he was very pleased with the good work done by the unemployed workers in the grounds, and he greatly appreciated the opportunity of improving the property to make it both increasingly useful as well as attractive.
