HAVOC ON TWELVE MILE FRONT IN SOUTH ISLAND fire fighters save houses

ASHBURTON, Tuesday. Tfie most extensive .grass fires in the Ashburton county for years started this afternoon, six miles. south pf Hinds. The blaze destroyed the county pjlantation,, thousands of acres ef pastures and many eat stacks, extending a distance pf 12 miles. Over 150 men "feught the flames for from six to seven hours, saving four houses ahd a wool shed which contaiped twe seasons' clips. There was no loss of stock, but a large implement shed was burned.
