The populace fushed into the streets praying ahd carrying iihages. They were particularly tdrrified owing to the fact that January '21 will tnark the centenary of the fartious erufition of the Coseghiria VolCanb in Nicafgua. Ashes are still fallin'g from the Mexican frbntier to Nicaragua. Sarita Ana city (Salvador) is reported to be covefed with a layer of -ashes The people ,of AntigUa (Guatfemala) are wadihg ih defep ashes; There- was- a heavy fall of ashes qolse to the vdlcario'es where they ard over -three feet deej) iii some sections. The aslies havfe- destrOyed cOffee and other Crops. The 'earth alsb is said to be badly cracked iii the affect'ed area. A message frotn Guatemala City States that the destrnction of cominunications is preventing the reeeption Of detailed- information, ;but it is- f eared that great damage has been done by the sudden eruption 30 miles from there. of the volcanoes Fufego and Acatemango. The towns of Antigua, Santa Luc!a and Cotz Umaltuar d$ as wfell as sev'eral smaller communities, are reported to have been destroyed. ... The entite Repilblic of Guatemala is terrified by a series of earthquakes, some of which were violent, which were centerdd in the vicinity of Lacar gepequez There were followed by. approxmately 50 further shocks. Dense clouds of smokej filled with ashes shot from the volcanoes, were carried in the wind as far as San Salvador. The streets and roof-tops of San Salvador are convered with ashes. The shocks have now apparently ceased, but the citizens are much alarmed.
