OLD LANDMARK
REMOVAL OF OLD HORSE HXTCHING RAIL .IN TUTANEKAI ST. Rotorua Borough councillors at ■ 'jheir meeting last evening deviated Trom weighty considerations of muni- • .upal matters to discuss the passing )f another old Rotorua land-mark, ihe horse hitching rail opposite the Grand buildings. Although Councillor E. T. Johnson, as the chairman of the W orks Committee, which recommended the rernoval of the rail, said that there was now only one horse around Rotorua, the old hitching post found a champion in the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) who said he thought that if times continued to be hard, there might be" more horses and less cars. Mr. Jackson added that he quite agreed with the committee's recom- " mendation that the rail should he removed but he thought that as it was an old land-mark, it might be rCerected somewhere else. Strengthening his appeal, Mr. Jackson instanced the case of a hypothetical drover arriving thirsty in the town and haw ing no hitching place for his horse while he slaked his thirst. The picture thus conjured up appeared to move councillors who ; suggested that the rail might easily be re-erected in another street. Cr. Johnson, in this connection, enquifed amid general appreciation, whether his Worship had any particular reason for wanting-.the rail erected in the vicinity of an hotel. The council was now in a thoroughly sympathetic frame of mind and decided to re-erect the rail in Pukuatua Street.
