NOT FAIR
CAMP facilities COMPETITION OF TENTS WITH BOARDING IIOUSES "* * COUNGIL DISCUSSION "J "I don't think the thing is fair at all," said Gr, W. Galbraith at last ; evening's meeting of the Rotorua - Borough Council when entering a protest against an applieation by Mr. D. ,H. Edwards for permission to erect .'•> three tents for the accommodatio.n of . visitors on his section adjaoe.bt. tp the Borough Camp site. .Cr. Galbraith - ; said that if this sort of thing was per- * mitted, tents would go up all over the " town. It was not fair to the boarding houses which were compelled to put in all sorts of facilities. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) said the General Committee was not fav- ^ ourably disposed towards the princi- - • ple of the thing but it was desired to meet campers who came to the -- town expecting to hire tents and found - that they were unable to do so. Cr. Galbraith said a precedent was . „ being set up. What attitude would . 1 the council take if further applications of this nature were reeeived ? . ; The applicant had not the proper facilities and was using those at the ;; camp site. , £ Opposed to Principle Cr. Albert Smith said that he:.was opposed to the principle of the thing. - It was setting up inferior accommodation which was in competition with " the boarding houses. The Mayor said this applicant's. per- ^ mit had been granted an previous pccasions but this year the committee had taken up the -attitude that Mr .. Edwards should provide adequate fac'lities from a health point of view * As an alternative to this, it had heen decided that Mr. Edwards should be asked to pay a fee for the use of the facilities at the motor camp. Last year, people occupying these par- , ticular tents had used the motor camp conveniences without the council deriving any revenue. T Cr. Urquhart- and Cr. Johnson expressed the opinion that Mr. Edwards' position was isola^ed. His section was adjacent to the camp , and they did not think other similar * applications would he made. . . Cr. O. H. Coleman said that. it was now rather close to the holiday season to refuse permtssion, but he - thought that while permission might be granted this year, it should be /ery carefully considered if applica'.ion was made again. He moved along these lines, and ■" he motion was carried . Under the committee's recommend■tion, Mr. Edwards was granted pernission to erect three tents provid:d that he installed adequate saniary accommodation ,or that he paid 0/- per wcek per tent for the use )f the camp facilities. in. wmi —im. ■■■■■■— J»w I'l" —
